Nicotine pouches usually combine nicotine with a structural material, flavourings and ingredients that manage moisture, sweetness and pH. The exact formulation is not identical across brands.


The useful way to read an ingredient list is by function. Cellulose can provide structure, a humectant can retain moisture, and a pH regulator adjusts the formulation's pH. Different manufacturers can use different materials to perform the same job.

The outer pouch and the filling are different

A nicotine pouch has two separate parts: the material that forms the pouch and the formulation held inside it.


The outer material is typically a soft non-woven structure made from plant-derived fibres such as cellulose or related materials. Its job is to contain the formulation while allowing moisture to move through the pouch during use.


Inside that material is the formulation containing nicotine and supporting ingredients. Depending on the product, these can include a carrier or filler, flavourings, sweeteners, humectants and pH regulators.


This distinction matters because a cellulose-based outer pouch does not necessarily mean cellulose is also the main carrier inside every product.

Common nicotine pouch ingredient roles

Although individual recipes differ, the same functional categories appear repeatedly in manufacturer ingredient information and independent product research.

This table describes ingredient roles rather than a universal recipe. Independent research has also found substantial variation between commercially available nicotine pouches, including differences in nicotine content and other product characteristics.

Carrier and filler ingredients

Cellulose and other plant-derived fibres are common structural ingredients in nicotine pouches. Microcrystalline cellulose is one documented example.


The carrier or filler provides structure to the material inside the pouch. It is not the active nicotine ingredient, and it should not be confused with the outer pouch material even when both are plant-derived.


Several brands describe this part of the formulation simply as plant fibres or plant-based materials rather than naming an individual cellulose compound.

Real examples from ZYN, VELO, Pablo and KLAR

Manufacturer information makes the differences between formulations clearer.

ZYN Mini contains nicotine salt, fillers, pH adjusters, stabilisers, sweetener and flavours. ZYN Regular adds salt, humectants and water.


VELO uses a simpler public description. VELO UK groups its ingredients into nicotine, plant-based materials, water, flavourings and sweeteners.


Pablo provides another plant-fibre example. Its manufacturer, N.G.P Tobacco ApS, states that the pouch itself is made from plant fibres and describes the filling more broadly as nicotine with food-grade ingredients.


KLAR is the clearest documented exception to the conventional cellulose model. KLAR describes SERATEK as a patented calcium-based bioceramic compound. The material is coated with nicotine and blended with other formulation ingredients.


These examples show why "what are nicotine pouches made from?" does not have one brand-independent ingredient list.

Where does the nicotine come from?

The absence of tobacco leaf does not tell you how the nicotine itself was produced.


Nicotine can be extracted from tobacco or manufactured synthetically. These routes produce nicotine for use in products that do not contain tobacco leaf.


ZYN UK explicitly states that its nicotine is derived from tobacco even though the finished ZYN pouch does not contain tobacco leaf.


Synthetic nicotine is also used in oral nicotine pouches. Research comparing different nicotine forms has examined pouches containing both predominantly S-nicotine and racemic synthetic nicotine.


The useful distinction is therefore simple: tobacco-free describes the finished pouch, while synthetic describes the origin or manufacture of the nicotine. The two terms are not interchangeable.

Flavourings

Flavourings create the stated flavour profile of a nicotine pouch. Mint, citrus, berry and other variants can therefore use different flavour formulations even within the same brand.


"Flavouring" is a functional category rather than one single ingredient. Manufacturers do not always publish every individual compound used in a flavour blend.

Sweeteners

Sweeteners adjust sweetness without performing the same job as the flavour compounds themselves.


ZYN UK, for example, specifically identifies Acesulfame K as its sweetener. VELO also lists sweeteners as one of its five main ingredient groups.


Different formulations can use different sweeteners, so the presence of one sweetener in one brand should not be assumed across the entire category.

What do E-numbers mean on an ingredient list?

Some ingredient declarations use an E-number instead of, or alongside, the ingredient's chemical name.


For example, E950 is Acesulfame K. E460(i) identifies microcrystalline cellulose, while E500 covers sodium carbonates.


An E-number therefore does not automatically mean an additional ingredient has been added. It can be another way of identifying a substance already described elsewhere by its name or function.


For a specific nicotine pouch, the product's own declaration determines which additives are actually present.

Water and humectants

Water and humectants form part of the moisture system in some nicotine pouch formulations.


Humectants such as glycerol or propylene glycol help retain moisture. This is a different function from cellulose or other structural fillers.


The ZYN Mini and Regular comparison shows that even products from the same brand can approach moisture differently. ZYN UK states that Regular includes water and humectants, while Mini does not contain added water.

pH regulators

Nicotine pouch formulations can contain ingredients that regulate pH. Sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate are common documented examples.


These may appear on ingredient information as pH adjusters, pH regulators or acidity regulators.


The pH system is separate from nicotine strength. Knowing how many milligrams of nicotine a pouch contains does not identify which pH regulator is used in its formulation.

Binders and stabilisers

Some formulations also contain binders or stabilisers.


Their job is to help maintain the physical structure and consistency of the filling. Published examples include hydroxypropyl cellulose and gum arabic.


ZYN specifically lists stabilisers in its Mini formulation. Other manufacturers may use different supporting ingredients or describe them under broader functional categories.

Do nicotine pouches contain tobacco?

Nicotine pouches do not use tobacco leaf as the filling material. This is the basic product distinction between nicotine pouches and traditional snus, where tobacco forms part of the pouch contents.


That does not mean every nicotine pouch uses synthetic nicotine. A product can contain no tobacco leaf while still using nicotine originally derived from tobacco.

How to read a nicotine pouch ingredient list

Start by identifying what job each ingredient performs rather than treating every unfamiliar name as a completely separate part of the product.


Look first for the nicotine ingredient and the carrier or filler. Then identify flavourings, sweeteners, moisture-control ingredients and pH regulators.


If the declaration uses an E-number, it may simply be an alternative identifier for an ingredient such as Acesulfame K or microcrystalline cellulose.


Nicotine strength should be compared separately from ingredient composition. Two products can contain the same stated nicotine amount while using different carriers, moisture systems or supporting ingredients.
